Council Members

In addition to the members listed below, the members of the foundation’s board also serve as council members.

Jörgen Nordenström

Jörgen Nordenström, Chair of the Council, is Professor Emeritus of Surgery at Karolinska Institutet. His research focuses primarily on endocrine surgery and metabolism, with particular emphasis on hyperparathyroidism, calcium, and bone mineral metabolism. Nordenström is actively involved in education and quality matters in healthcare and has a long-standing interest in evidence-based medicine.

Bo Angelin

Bo Angelin is Senior Professor of Clinical Metabolic Research at Karolinska Institutet and former Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, as well as former Director of Research and Development at Karolinska University Hospital. His research focuses on the regulation of lipid metabolism in humans, with particular interest in how this knowledge can be applied to develop diagnostics and new treatments. Angelin has extensive experience from serving on the Nobel Committee and the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet and is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He collaborates with several pharmaceutical companies in research and has also served as a board member of AstraZeneca PLC from 2007 to 2010.

Christer Betsholtz

Council member Christer Betsholtz (b. 1959) is Professor of Vascular Biology at Karolinska Institutet and Professor of Tumor Biology at Uppsala University. He has extensive experience in scientific evaluation work, including for the European Research Council (ERC) and the Swedish Cancer Society. Betsholtz is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), Academia Europaea, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet.

Anna Blom

Anna Blom is Professor of Medical Protein Chemistry at Lund University. Her research focuses on the complement system and its role in cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases. She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, a Wallenberg Scholar, and has served as Chair of the Scientific Council for Medicine and Health at the Swedish Research Council.

Maria Falkenberg

Maria Falkenberg is Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg. She studies the enzymatic machinery responsible for copying mitochondrial DNA in human cells. Her work aims to improve understanding of disease mechanisms affecting this genome and to develop new therapeutic strategies for treating mitochondrial diseases. Falkenberg is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, a Wallenberg Scholar, and has extensive experience in scientific evaluation, including work for the Swedish Research Council and the European Research Council (ERC). She is also a co-founder of Pretzel Therapeutics Inc.
